August 13: Night of the Rolling Dead
Two original derby teams face off on the flat track!
Mid Iowa Rollers – the first roller derby league in Iowa – take on Old Capitol City Roller Girls Saturday, August 13 at Hy-Vee Hall, downtown Des Moines in the Iowa Event Center!
Reasons not to miss this game are as strong as the teams themselves:
- The Old Capitol City Roller Girls (OCCRG) were originally founded by Mid Iowa Rollers’ own Sarah Carter, who’s a bit of a derby gypsy and legend all her own.
- OCCRG’s blocking force Laura Claps made the finals in last month’s tryouts for Team USA roller derby.
- Both teams are currently in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s apprentice league program so every win or loss counts.
- OCCRG are 8-1 this season, and Mid Iowa Rollers are coming off two wins at home. Last season they were 8-0, so this match-up will be FIERCE.
As always, come for derby, but also get in on the full bar, food, raffle and FUN. Drawing proceeds benefit Iowa Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, so be sure to catch one of those Mid Iowa Rollers skating around with the bucket full of chances… and you could win a bucket full of CASH.
When the lights go DOWN, the music comes UP, with a deejay on site to spin the smash-up tunes as derby girls spin and smash-up on the track… and local band Candy for Nickels will rock halftime.
All ages are welcome on the floor and in the stands, but take your place in SUICIDE SEATING at your risk only (and only if you’re 18)! Also, don’t forget your camera. After the bout, the derby girls will happily pose and sign autographs!
Kids 12 and under are always FREE. Advance tickets are $10, or $13 at the door. Get advanced tickets at Wells Fargo Arena or hit up one of the derby girls. Don’t know one? No problem. Just look them up on Facebook or Twitter and they’d be happy to hook you up.
